Who Am I?

Be honest, when was the last time you sat down and contemplated who you are?

Did you wait long enough to hear the answer? Perhaps you have never asked yourself this question. And why does it even matter?

The relationship we have with ourselves is the most important one we will ever experience. It is also the longest we have had or will have, with anyone. So, it’s imperative that we make it a good one. But the only way we can achieve this is by firstly understanding who we really are. Sadly, most of us don’t know.

Why? Sometimes we’re guilty of not giving this sacred relationship the quality time and attention it deserves.

Because we’re constantly with ourselves, many hours are invested into this bond. However, this time is not always conscious or focused on the right aspects; often we’re unaware of this. So, on the surface, we believe we understand ourselves intimately when in truth we don’t. Secondly, we are taught from a young age the importance of putting others’ needs before our own. We grow up believing it’s selfish or egoic to think about ourselves and who we are too much. Ironically this is what each of us needs to do so that we can lead more joyful, fulfilled lives.

Asking the question, ‘Who am I?’ is the most confronting one you will ever ask yourself.

When you sit quietly, get still and allow your soul some space to rise, you’ll recognise that you’re not your thoughts and beliefs, nor are you the expectations others place on you. Ones that you subconsciously take on as your own. Remove the roles you play. Mother, father, sister, brother, wife, husband, daughter, son, friend, neighbour, mentor or anything else you have labelled yourself to be. Take away the positions and responsibilities you hold in life. You are not these things. Repeat gently ‘Who am I?’ over and over until the noise dissipates and you begin to hear the whisperings of your own heart. Next, ask ‘What do I desire?’ As you ponder this, perhaps for the first time, the answers may surprise you, or silence may greet you. Let go of the limitations you place on yourself. What are you left with?

When you allow yourself to connect with your soul, at the core, is the essence of who you really are and what you really want.

After initially removing all your cloaks of protection, you may be left feeling naked and exposed, with no idea how to put yourself back together again. Embracing this vulnerability isn’t an easy process to work through and takes time. But when you’re finally prepared to do the work and consider how you truly want to show up in this world, you’ll discover a myriad of opportunities and potentiality. Prospects that you weren’t aware existed that lead to positive change in your life and subsequently the lives of those around you. You’ll become conscious and be rewarded with a feeling in your heart that you’re your greatest opportunity.

You are unique; there is no one else in the whole world exactly like you.

How exciting. Your ideas, your dreams, your visions, skills and life experiences are those extraordinary things that lie within, rather than outside of you. They can be tapped into, helping to unlock and realise your full potential and future. As you start to live a more harmonious life, you will begin to fulfil your purpose and reason for being here. One that looks completely different to anyone else’s, and that’s perfect. Doors that were once closed will be opened by the universe, and a world of endless possibilities will appear before you.

Peeling back another layer of the onion to get to the heart of who you really are is scary at times but also exhilarating.

The connection you have with yourself is vital so that you can hear and respond to your heartbeat; it’s imperative for your future growth and happiness. If you remember only one thing, know that you need to be authentically you and your most loyal supporter, no matter what.

And to do this fully, it all starts with the question, ‘Who am I?’ Go on, be brave, ask it!

With love,
